After 37 Years in Boulder: Right-Sizing to Erie, Colorado

I recently had the privilege of helping a couple who had lived in their Boulder home for 37 years.

Thirty-seven years.

When you've lived somewhere that long, you're not simply selling a piece of property. You're leaving a home filled with memories, people and gardens lovingly cared for, and volunteer activities that have been part of your life for decades.

After 37 years in their Boulder home, it was time to think about what would work better for their next chapter.

Their three-level home had served them well, but they started thinking about what they wanted their home to do for them in the years ahead. Having their everyday living on one level had become increasingly important.

Leaving a longtime home isn't just about square footage. It's about saying goodbye to a place filled with memories. and the relationships with the people

But there was another part of this move that mattered just as much.

They didn't want to leave their life behind just because they were leaving their house.

Their church is in Boulder. Their doctors are there. The businesses and services they regularly use are there. Their relationships, routines and connection to the community mattered.

So our goal wasn't simply to find a smaller house.

We needed to find a home that worked better for this next chapter while allowing them to stay connected to the life they had spent decades building.

Eventually, we found a home in Erie that was a great fit.

It gave them the kind of living arrangement they wanted while keeping them close enough to Boulder to continue going to their church, seeing their doctors and staying connected to the people and places that matter to them.

A new chapter, with a home that better fits the way they want to live now.

That's what I mean when I talk about right-sizing instead of simply downsizing.

We weren't trying to find less.

We were trying to find better for them now.

And after everything was finished, we got together for dinner to celebrate their new chapter.

That's one of my favorite parts of what I do. The paperwork may be finished, but the relationship isn't.

Real estate may be how we met, but my hope is that what remains is trust.
